The songs are crisp, tight and witty, the playing fierce or lyrical

defiantly tubular and analog Preston studio." Ken Williams,

THE BRUNSWICK MUSIC GROUP "LO-FI IN
THE LOUNGE" $25
The Brunswick Music Group's debut CD, 'Lo-Fi in the Lounge' has
certainly been a bit of a musical tart. She's been used on countless
radio stations by presenters needing something groovy and instrumental,
she graces the ipods, car and home stereos of countless Melburnians
and she's just sold herself to Grundy Television where's she's peddling
her wares for all and sundry on that doyen of Australian television,
'Neighbours'. There's a simple reason 'Lo-Fi in the Lounge' has
become an endearing record to so many; it's really quite good. It
is ten tracks of instrumental, loungy and groovy music played by
Ben Kahans (guitar), Dave Walker (bass), Francis Cleary (drums)
and Dan Knight (hammond/wurlitzer).And it's only $25. Go to the
Brunswick Music Group website: brunswickmusicgroup.webmelon.com,

SARAH CARROLL "WAHINE" $25
With Wahine, Sarah Carroll finally sheds the Gitgal image and steps out as an artist in her own right and on her own terms. Produced in collaboration with Marcel Borrack, who brings his own special alchemy to the project, Wahine also reveals Sarah as a superbly accomplished songwriter - soul ballad Crying at Midnight could be Dan Penned - and her singing has never sounded better. There's a palpable sense of joy about it - alternately tender, sassy, and often very moving. An album of great charm, and a career best.

CHARCOAL CLUB "CRY FREEDOM - Meeting Two"
$25
Richard Frankland, storyteller, film-maker, writer,
singer, committed humanist, indigenous activist, among other things,
formed The Charcoal Club "for burnt out blacks and singed whites"
with local roots music legend Andy Baylor in 2001, as a vehicle
for performing his own and other club members songs. Cry Freedom
is the second album from this collective, and features an extended
line-up, including the considerable talents of noted local indigenous
singer and wicked rhythm guitarist Monica Weightman, along with
Aurora Kurth, Rosanne Hunt, Andrew O'Grady and Harry Lye. In Richard
Frankland's life and work, the artistic and the political voice
are inseperable - it's no surprise that his recently formed political
party is called Your Voice. This new album is a mixture of polemics,
politics and the personal - 12 songs ranging from the anthemic title
song (which was performed live to 100,000 people during the recent
anti I.R. law rallies in Melbourne) to the stirring call for dissent
of Lawbreaker, the anger of Who Made Me Who I Am, to the resigned
longing of Andy Baylor's vocal on Last Tear. Cry Freedom is a stirring
call for defiance and the search for truth in the face of a decietful
and uncaring Government, and a passionate plea for understanding
from an intelligent, articulate and important Australian voice.

CHARCOAL CLUB "CRY FREEDOM - Meeting One" $25

ALANNA & ALICIA EGAN "FUNNY SHE'S SO MUCH
LIKE ME" $25
Sweet acoustic folk/jazz from Bendigo twin sibling

ALSO AVAILABLE:

 |
SUZANNAH ESPIE and the LAST WORD "A FEW MORE
DAYS " $25
Suzannah's first solo album, recorded largely with her crack band
The Last Word, shows her increasing maturity as a songwriter, book-ending
the record with three original songs on each side of five well-chosen
covers, highlights including a duet with Chris Parkinson (of The
Yearlings) on a flawless reading of the Louvin's "Lay Down
My Old Guitar", and a wonderfully swampy cover of Stacey Earle's
"Wedding Night". But it's her six original songs that
shine, particularly the bluesy "Cool Rain", the country
flavoured "Mean To Me", the title track, and the beautiful
uncertainty of acoustic closer "I Don't Know If You're The
One" with Marcel Borrack, who also helped out by adding his
magic to some of the production.
ALSO AVAILABLE:
THE YEARLINGS & SUZANNAH ESPIE W/ IAN COLLARD "THE BLESS
THIS HOUSE TOUR" $25

KATE FAGAN "DIAMOND WHEEL" $25

of her life. She is also an internationally recognised and published
poet, and on her first solo album, which was awarded the National
Film and Sound Archive Award for best folk album of 2006, she seamlessly
blends both disciplines into the beautifully realised Diamond Wheel.

MAURICE FRAWLEY & THE YARD HANDS "GOOD
THINGS" $25
New release from one of the unsung heroes of Australian
music. His new band are all crack country players, with Garrett
Costigan's pedal steel playing a standout. At his finest, Frawley
conjures up home-grown bar-room poetry of great resonance and poignancy.
A soulful outing by a hometown diamond in the rough.

LIZ FRENCHAM & THE DREAM SEAT "JERICHO"
$30
Expat Sydney double-bass player Liz Frencham, now
settled in Melbourne, studied jazz bass at the Sydney Conservatorium
of Music, and went on to hone her considerable talents with festival
favourites Jigzag, and later with songwriter/ singer Fred Smith.
JERICHO is her first solo project, an album of personal, intimate
songs recorded with the help of the Dream Seat, a large and varied
floating collective of like musical minds and collaborators, or
as Liz puts it..."the dream rhythm section, the most comfortable
groove...a cohesion of different creative souls." This is very
much a bass player's album, eclectic and varied, ranging loosely
between jazz and folk styles - folk-jazz? - and obviously coming
to us from a warm and open heart. There are some strong songs here
- particularly Room At The Table, The Stronger The Tree, and Suitcase,
a loving, hope-full song about moving to a new life in a new town
to be with a new lover, which brings to mind the great English folk-singer
Sandy Denny. But the real kicker here is the title track Jericho,
a beautiful and flawless lesson in how to write the perfect three-minute
song!
